New Technology for Termite Management Liquids and Baits
8:00am -9:00am Dr. Jason Meyers (BASF)
Dr. Meyers currently serves as Pest Control Solutions Market Development Specialist for BASF Corporation, agricultural products, specialty products division and has served with BASF since 2008. From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Meyers performed graduate research and Teaching Assistant Duties at Texas A&M University, Department of Entomology, Urban and Structural Entomology Lab under Dr. Roger Gold. He obtained his Master of Science in Entomology from the University of Arkansas in 2004 and his Doctorate in Entomology from Texas A&M University in 2008. Dr. Meyers has published findings and articles in industry Journals and spoken throughout the United States at Recertification Meetings and Training Seminars.
Dr. Meyers will discuss new technologies in termite control including termite baits utilizing integrated pest management principles and liquids. He will discuss subterranean termite biology, colony behavior, proper inspection techniques (to include types of building construction monolithic slab, jointed slabs, crawl space and basement types) so termite applicators have a better understanding of treatment strategies for effective termite management. The topic will also cover advantages and disadvantages to a stand-alone baiting system particularly in situations where termite damage necessitates immediate control of termites and use of a liquid termiticides in conjunction with a baiting system.
Mosquito Management Barrier and Yard Applications
9:00am – 10:00am Nicky Gallagher, Ph.D. (Syngenta)
Dr. Nicky Gallagher joined Syngenta Professional Products in 2012 and serves as the Technical Services Manager for the Midwest Professional Pest Management market. Dr. Gallagher has a strong background in urban entomology, with over 10 years’ experience. Dr. Gallagher maintains responsibility for all phases of field testing and technical support within her region and coordinates numerous research programs with university researchers. Dr. Gallagher holds a B.S. from the College of Mount Saint Joseph (Cincinnati, Ohio), along with an M.S. and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio).
With the recent news surrounding Zika and potential health risks in the United States, it is critical that our industry professionals have information about all tools available to assist in managing mosquito populations and diseases that they carry. There are approximately 200 species of mosquitoes in the United States, with around 50-60 species in Kentucky. While only a few of these mosquitoes are a significant nuisance or public health pest, they are extremely annoying and do pose the risk of disease transmission. This presentation will discuss how and where mosquitoes breed, the role they play in disease transmission and what can be done to reduce their numbers in and around the home and to protect yourself and your customers from bites.

Ant Management Century 21
11:15am – 12:15pm Tommy Powell (MGK)
Thomas Powell currently serves as Eastern Technical Field Representative for MGK. Mr. Powell has 16 years of experience in the pest management industry including Technical Director for Clegg’s Pest Control, Home Team Pest Defense, and Home Paramount. He also held a position as Branch Manager for Home Team Pest Defense for 5 years. Thomas holds pest licensing in multiple states and has trained and presented at numerous recertification training meeting on multiple topics relevant to the structural pest management industry.
Mr. Powell will review and discuss Managing ants including odorous house ants through a combination of strategies to assist technicians and mangers in everyday operations. Tommy will include aspects of IPM in regard to inspection, identification, communication, and chemical / non-chemical control methods including ornamental applications and trimming. He will review and identify top problem ant pests in our Region, with a focus on those nuisance pests we deal with here in Kentucky, Indiana Ohio. Mr. Powell will also detail the importance of when, where, and how to integrate effective baits and how to utilize new residual technologies into control programs. The focus will be on general pest management through utilization of integrated pest management principles including the use of chemical controls in conjunction with non-chemical, mechanical, structural repairs and sanitation.
